Hronský Beňadik Monastery (Slovakia)

Weather…

The Benedictine Monastery in Hronský Beňadik is one of the oldest and most significant spiritual centers in Slovakia, founded in 1075 by King Géza I. For centuries, it served as a bastion of Christianity and culture in the Kingdom of Hungary. The current monumental complex is dominated by the Gothic Church of St. Benedict, built between 1346 and 1375 on the site of an earlier Romanesque basilica. Due to the Ottoman threat in the 16th century, the monastery was reconstructed into a powerful Renaissance fortress with massive walls and bastions, giving it its characteristic defensive appearance. The monastery housed valuable treasures, including a Holy Blood relic presented by King Matthias Corvinus in 1483. The church interior is famous for its late Gothic altarpiece and the Holy Sepulchre, a unique mobile artwork. Despite fires and wars, the core of the complex remains preserved and is now a national cultural monument of immense historical and artistic value.
