Červený Kláštor is located in the heart of the Pieniny National Park, right on the border with Poland. The village is named after the Red Monastery, founded in 1319 by Carthusian monks. It is famous as the home of Brother Cyprian, an 18th-century monk who created a renowned herbarium and, according to legend, constructed wings to fly from the nearby peaks. The monastery complex is now a museum showcasing medieval monastic life and Gothic architecture. The highlight of any visit is rafting down the Dunajec River Gorge. Local guides dressed in traditional Goral costumes steer wooden rafts through the limestone canyon along a 9-kilometer stretch. The route provides dramatic views of the Three Crowns (Trzy Korony) mountain peaks. For those who prefer land, a scenic hiking and cycling path follows the riverbank all the way to the Polish town of Szczawnica. Local gastronomy is rooted in Goral traditions, featuring smoked sheep cheese and fresh trout from the river. The village is accessible by car from Poprad or Stará Ľubovňa. The best time to visit is from late spring to autumn, when the rafting season is active and the surrounding forests display spirited colors, especially during the fall foliage.
