Niedzica Castle, also known as Dunajec Castle, is a majestic medieval fortress perched on a limestone cliff overlooking Lake Czorsztyn in the Pieniny Mountains. Established in the early 14th century by the Berzeviczy family, it served as a strategic border post between the Kingdom of Hungary and Poland. The complex consists of an Upper Castle from the Gothic period and a Lower Castle featuring Renaissance architecture and decorative sgraffito. A local legend suggests a mysterious connection to the Incas, claiming that an 18th-century descendant hid a golden treasure map within the castle walls. Today, the site functions as a museum displaying historical period rooms, antique maps, and a collection of historical artifacts. Its panoramic terraces offer dramatic views of the neighboring Czorsztyn Castle ruins and the surrounding mountain landscape. The castle has frequently appeared in films and television series, solidifying its status as a cultural icon in the region.
