Dunajec River (Poland)

Weather…

The Dunajec is profoundly one of the absolute wildest and most spectacularly scenic mountain rivers in southern Poland, decisively beginning its powerful journey high within the jagged peaks of the Tatra Mountains. On its relentless path northward, the river deeply slices through various entirely fascinating geological formations, with the undeniably spectacular gorge carving directly through the immensely steep, brilliant white limestone cliffs of the Pieniny Mountains serving as the unquestionable highlight. The river is strongly characterized by its exceedingly dynamic nature: highly rapid, remarkably rocky white-water rapids that are extremely popular with thrill-seeking kayakers abruptly alternate with deeply still, dark green pools that perfectly reflect the highly dense coniferous forests clinging to the banks. The Dunajec sustains an incredibly rich fish fauna, most notably including the critically endangered huchen (Danube salmon) alongside thriving populations of grayling and trout, securely making it a strictly world-class destination for avid fly fishers. Historically, the rapidly flowing river additionally served as one of the most vitally important trade routes for transporting valuable timber rapidly from the Carpathians down toward the Vistula River and the distant Baltic Sea.
