Gerulata (Slovakia)

Weather…

Gerulata was a significant Roman military fort (castellum) located on the Pannonian Limes, the fortified border of the Roman Empire. Situated in the present-day Rusovce district of Bratislava, it was established in the 1st century AD during the reign of Emperor Domitian. The fort's primary mission was to defend the city of Carnuntum and monitor strategic crossing points on the Danube River. For centuries, it served as the base for the elite cavalry unit 'Ala I Cannanefatum.' Archaeological excavations have revealed the foundations of barracks, wells, cemeteries, and a wealth of everyday artifacts, coins, and Roman inscriptions. Particularly valuable are the funerary stelae, which provide a window into the lives of the soldiers and their families. In 2021, Gerulata was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list as part of the 'Frontiers of the Roman Empire, The Danube Limes.' Today, the site features a museum that showcases the well-preserved ruins and the rich Roman heritage of the region.
