Bíňa Earthen Walls (Slovakia)

Weather…

Bíňa, a village located along the Hron River, is home to one of the most massive medieval defensive systems in Slovakia, known as the 'Bíňa Ramparts.' These enormous earthen walls enclose an area of approximately 100 hectares and, in their current form, likely date back to the 11th century, potentially built upon earlier Avar fortifications. The system comprises three concentric lines of ramparts, once reinforced with deep ditches, serving as a refuge for the local population and a strategic military outpost. Within this protected perimeter lie two architectural gems: the Romanesque Rotunda of the Twelve Apostles and the monumental Premonstratensian monastery church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary from the early 13th century. The combination of massive earthworks and sophisticated sacred architecture makes Bíňa a unique site of early Hungarian statehood and church organization. The ramparts remain clearly visible in the landscape as embankments several meters high.
