Kovilj Monastery (Serbia)

Weather…

Kovilj Monastery is located in the Bačka region of Vojvodina, near the city of Novi Sad. According to local legend, the monastery was founded in the 13th century by Saint Sava, the first Archbishop of the Serbian Orthodox Church, at the exact spot where he mediated a peace treaty between Hungarian and Serbian forces. The present-day church, a grand structure dedicated to the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel, was built between 1705 and 1707. Its architectural style shows clear Baroque and Neoclassical influences, typical of the cultural crossroads of the Vojvodina plains during the 18th century. The interior is graced by a massive iconostasis painted by the renowned artist Aksentije Marodić in the late 19th century. Today, Kovilj is one of the largest and most spirited monastic communities in Serbia, home to numerous monks. The monastery is famous throughout the Balkans for its high-quality products, including honey, herbal liqueurs, and traditional fruit brandies (rakija). Additionally, the monastery is well-known for its social outreach through the 'Land of the Living' rehabilitation project, which provides support for individuals recovering from addiction.
