Staro Hopovo Monastery (Serbia)

Weather…

The Staro Hopovo Monastery is tucked away on the southern slopes of the Fruška Gora National Park and is one of the 16 surviving monasteries on the 'Serbian Holy Mountain.' It was founded in the 15th century, with tradition attributing its construction to Despot Đorđe Branković. The original wooden church was replaced in 1752 by a stone structure dedicated to Saint Panteleimon. Its architecture is single-naved and modest, typical of smaller hermitages in the region, yet it maintains a close spiritual connection with the nearby, larger Novo Hopovo Monastery. In 1941, during World War II, the monastery suffered severe damage and its iconostasis was destroyed, leading to decades of abandonment. Since the early 2000s, the complex has undergone extensive restoration, and monastic life has been successfully revitalized. The secluded location in dense forest provides an atmosphere of reflection, making it a key destination for both nature enthusiasts and cultural travelers.
