Jazak Monastery
Jazak Monastery is set in an idyllic valley on the southern slopes of Mount Fruška Gora and is most famous for housing the relics of the last ruler of the Nemanjić dynasty, Tsar Stefan Uroš V. The current monastery, often referred to as 'New Jazak,' was founded between 1736 and 1758 after the original 15th-century monastery fell into disrepair. The architecture of the church, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, represents a harmonious blend of traditional Serbian elements and Baroque influences prevalent in the Danube region at the time. The massive iconostasis is a masterpiece of woodcarving, adorned with icons painted by Dimitrije Bačević, one of the leading artists of the 18th century. During World War II, the monastery was looted, but the precious relics of the Tsar were successfully hidden and saved, returning to their place of honor in the church after the war. Surrounded by dense forests, the complex gives an atmosphere of profound peace and contemplation. As one of the youngest monasteries on Fruška Gora, Jazak stands out for its well-preserved appearance and its immense significance to Serbian national identity. Every year, thousands of pilgrims gather here on the feast day of Saint Tsar Uroš for a celebratory liturgy.
