Petkovica Monastery (Serbia)

Weather…

The Petkovica Monastery is located on the southwestern slopes of the Fruška Gora mountain range, near the village of Šišatovac in Serbia. It was founded in the early 16th century, with tradition naming Despotess Jelena Štiljanović as the founder who commissioned the original church in 1588. The architecture follows the classic Byzantine style, featuring a Greek cross ground plan and a prominent central dome that defines its silhouette. The interior is decorated with valuable frescoes dating back to 1588, which are considered significant examples of post-Byzantine art in the region. Throughout its history, the monastery suffered major damage during Ottoman rule and particularly in World War II, but it was extensively restored in the following decades. Today, it serves as an active nunnery and remains a key spiritual site within the cluster of monasteries on Fruška Gora. Its historical and cultural importance is recognized as part of Serbia's national heritage and its scenic location attracts numerous visitors annually.
