💡 Tips
- Don't miss the Santa Catarina tunnel, the iconic landmark at the very end of the paved road.
- As this is the end of the road, it's the first-rate spot to enjoy the sunset in peaceful isolation.
- Talk to the local fishermen; they sometimes offer boat trips to nearby hidden coves.
- Bring enough water and snacks, as shopping options are very limited in this remote village.

Santa Catarina marks the end of the paved road on São Tomé's west coast and sits in the Lembá district, framed by steep volcanic slopes and the untamed Atlantic. The town began as a small fishing and plantation hamlet in a zone where the roça economy never dominated as it did in the north, because the topography is too rugged and the surf too violent. This very isolation has made the region one of the most ecologically valuable areas of the island nation: the hinterland holds the last undisturbed lowland rainforests, home to endemic orchids such as Bulbophyllum sanguineum, the rare maroon pigeon and the São Tomé reed warbler. The Cascata Santa Catarina, one of the island's most spectacular waterfalls, plunges from the forest into a black-sand beach just a few kilometers away. Despite its marginality, Santa Catarina is increasingly a starting point for low-impact ecotourism, with small guesthouses, local guides and boat trips along the wild lava coast.
