Neves Hills

The higher ground behind the town has great views of the port and the sunset over the Atlantic.

Neves is the capital of the Lembá district on São Tomé's northwestern Atlantic coast and is considered the island's industrial powerhouse. The town developed in the 19th century around a sheltered bay and gradually became the home port for fuel, cement and food imports. Today, Neves hosts the country's largest brewery (Cervejas e Refrigerantes de São Tomé) and a major fuel depot, making it the logistical backbone of the west coast. The cityscape is defined by the white Nossa Senhora da Conceição church, a bustling port quay lined with small blue fishing boats and colorful market halls where the famous santola, the island's largest crab species, is sold. Every year Neves hosts the Festival da Santola, which draws thousands of visitors from across the country. From here, roads lead to nearby cocoa roças and to the dramatic Boca do Inferno rock formation, where the Atlantic, forced through a lava tube, shoots up multi-meter-high water columns.
