Generosa is a small rural hamlet in the Lembá district of western São Tomé that owes its name, „the generous one“, to the exceptional fertility of the volcanic soils. The settlement was founded as an agricultural colony in the 19th century but remained in the shadow of the major roças such as Diogo Vaz and Monte Café, thereby preserving its peasant character. Today, residents live mostly from subsistence farming with small organic banana fields, cassava and breadfruit gardens, and traditional medicinal herb beds where local healers, curandeiros, cultivate plants for folk medicine. Characteristic of Generosa is the practice of djunta-mon, the mutual help in field work that is still very much alive here. Architecturally, low wooden and corrugated-iron houses on stilts dominate, surrounded by blooming hibiscus and cactus gardens. Visitors looking to discover the island beyond the tourist trails will find in Generosa an authentic, peaceful and extraordinarily hospitable community.
