Ponta Figo lies on a striking headland of São Tomé's west coast in the Lembá district and owes its name to the wild fig trees that grow among the lava rocks and surf. The settlement is one of the oldest rural roça outposts in the west and grew from a mixture of plantation worker villages and small fishing communities. Today, the place is best known for its spectacular coastline: black basalt columns, lava arches and tidal pools alternate with small black-sand coves. Between July and October, humpback whales and bottlenose dolphins migrate past Ponta Figo, making it one of the best whale-watching spots on the island. The nearby primary school, one of the district's oldest, is a relic of early post-colonial education policy. Ponta Figo preserves a quiet, traditional way of life in which women dry guzo fish on the beach and men venture far offshore in outrigger canoes for deep-sea fishing.
