Lake Rweru is a significant body of water in southeastern Rwanda, situated on the border with Burundi. It covers a total area of approximately 100 square kilometers, with the majority of its surface area lying within Burundi. Geographically, the lake is highly important as it is considered one of the primary sources of the Akagera River, which is the most distant headstream of the Nile. The lake lies in a marshy depression and is surrounded by extensive papyrus swamps that provide a vital habitat for various waterfowl and amphibians. The surrounding region is characterized by intensive agriculture and subsistence fishing, with tilapia being the primary catch. Geologically, the lake basin is part of eastern Rwanda's complex drainage system, defined by shallow lakes and vast wetlands. In recent years, Lake Rweru has become a focus of regional environmental policy due to ecological shifts and the need for coordinated transboundary water management.
