Peterhof Palace (Russia)

Weather…

The palace and park ensemble of Peterhof, situated on the southern shore of the Gulf of Finland, is one of the most spectacular architectural achievements of the 18th century. Conceived by Tsar Peter the Great as a triumphal monument following his victory over Sweden, the complex dazzles with its opulent Grand Palace and an unparalleled system of hundreds of fountains. The magnificent Grand Cascade plunges from the palace terrace into a marine canal leading directly to the Baltic Sea, powered entirely by natural underground springs without the use of pumps. The sumptuous interiors of the palace, including the throne room and the majestic ballroom, are lavishly decorated with gold leaf, silk, and precious wood carvings. During World War II, the estate was almost completely destroyed, but decades of meticulous restoration work have returned Peterhof to its original splendor, attracting millions of art and history enthusiasts today.
