Kronstadt Naval Cathedral (Russia)

Weather…

The Naval Cathedral of St. Nicholas in Kronstadt, built on the island fortress of Kotlin in the Gulf of Finland, is a majestic monument dedicated to all fallen sailors of the Russian Navy. Constructed between 1903 and 1913 according to a design by Vasily Kosyakov, the cathedral is the last and largest masterpiece of Neo-Byzantine architecture in Russia. With its gigantic, silvery dome, which often served as a landmark for arriving ships, it towers high above the historic port city. Inside, Orthodox piety and maritime heritage merge: black marble plaques on the walls are engraved with the names of fallen sailors and officers, while mosaics and stained-glass windows depict anchors, ships, and maritime motifs. During the Soviet era, the magnificent building temporarily served as a cinema and a sailors' club before being reconsecrated as the main church of the Russian fleet in 2013 following massive restoration work.
