Peter and Paul Cathedral Kazan (Russia)

Weather…

The Peter and Paul Cathedral in Kazan is one of the most magnificent and unique examples of Naryshkin Baroque architecture in Russia, reflecting the city's 18th-century prosperity. It was constructed between 1723 and 1726 by the wealthy merchant Ivan Mikhlyaev to commemorate the 1722 visit of Emperor Peter the Great to Kazan. The cathedral's architecture is celebrated for its spirited color palette and elaborate stone carvings featuring floral motifs and intricate ornamentation across its exterior walls. A major interior highlight is the impressive seven-tier gilded iconostasis, which stands nearly 25 meters tall and represents a pinnacle of Russian woodcarving art. Having survived several major fires and a period of secular use as a planetarium during the Soviet era, the cathedral was restored to the church in the late 1980s. Perched on a hill, it remains a dominant feature of Kazan's skyline and a testament to the enduring fusion of diverse artistic influences in the region.
