Kazan Kremlin (Russia)

Weather…

The Kazan Kremlin, an imposing citadel situated on a hill above the Volga and Kazanka rivers, embodies the complex historical fusion of two great cultures. Once the most important fortress of the Kazan Khanate of the Golden Horde, the complex was conquered in the 16th century by Ivan the Terrible and largely rebuilt in the Russian architectural style. Today, the Kremlin presents itself as a harmonious architectural ensemble where Christian Orthodox and Islamic traditions peacefully coexist. Dominating the skyline is the magnificent Kul Sharif Mosque, featuring brilliant blue domes and slender minarets, which was completed in the early 2000s as a symbol of Tatar revival. Just a few steps away stands the historic white-stone Annunciation Cathedral. Another architectural landmark is the mysterious Söyembikä Tower, one of Europe's most famous leaning towers, steeped in legends of a proud Tatar queen.
