The Perm Opera and Ballet Theater is one of Russia's most significant music theaters and bears the name of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Since the composer was born in the region, the theater is the only stage in Russia that has performed his entire stage works. The building opened in 1870 and was remodeled several times during the 20th century, preserving its neoclassical splendor. During World War II, Perm became an important refuge for the Leningrad Kirov Ballet (now Mariinsky), which resulted in the founding of Perm's own first-class ballet school. Today, the Perm Ballet School is considered one of the best worldwide and regularly produces stars for international stages. The theater is known for its high musical quality and the maintenance of Russian traditions while remaining open to modern directorial concepts.
