Nemunas Delta (Lithuania)

Weather…

The Nemunas Delta, known locally as Nemuno delta, is a spectacular, exceedingly low-lying alluvial plain in the far west of Lithuania, where the country's largest river empties into the Curonian Lagoon and the Baltic Sea. It is a highly dynamic geological landscape that continuously advances into the lagoon due to the constant deposition of massive amounts of fluvial sediments. The delta forms a complex, intricate labyrinth of numerous main and side river branches, small navigation channels, oxbow lakes, polders, and wet meadows. Because much of the area lies just barely above or even slightly below sea level, it is highly prone to extensive spring floods. This intact wetland is of global ecological importance, serving as a critical resting and breeding ground for millions of migratory birds along the East Atlantic Flyway. The region is also celebrated for its traditional island fishing villages, such as Rusnė.
