Ventė Cape Ornithological Station (Lithuania)

Weather…

The Ventė Cape Ornithological Station, situated on a peninsula jutting deep into the Curonian Lagoon, stands as one of the oldest and most significant bird-ringing stations in Europe. It was founded in 1929 by the eminent Lithuanian biologist Tadas Ivanauskas. The geographical location of the station is unparalleled, as it lies directly on one of the major flight paths of European migratory birds, known as the White Sea-Baltic flyway. During the peak autumn migration, millions of birds pass over the cape daily. Many are safely captured for scientific research using gigantic, funnel-shaped nets designed by the resident ornithologists, which are recognized as some of the largest bird traps in the world. Annually, tens of thousands of birds are ringed at Ventė, sometimes exceeding ten thousand in a single day, to track their migration routes, longevity, and population dynamics. A small educational museum and a historic lighthouse on the grounds enrich the experience for visitors.
