Vistulamouth Fortress (Poland)

Weather…

The Vistulamouth Fortress (Twierdza Wisłoujście) in Gdańsk is an outstanding and European-wide unique example of maritime military architecture. Its strategic location right at the mouth of the Vistula River flowing into the Baltic Sea made it the crucial 'Key to Gdańsk' for centuries, tightly controlling the approach to the wealthy port and repelling enemy naval fleets. The oldest and most striking part of the complex is the sturdy cylindrical brick tower dating from the late 15th century, which originally served a dual purpose as both a military watchtower and a vital lighthouse, with a signal fire lit at its very top every night. Over time, the fortress was continuously upgraded: a square fort (Fort Carré) was added in the 16th century, which was subsequently enclosed by a sophisticated star-shaped moat and rampart system. The site witnessed numerous historic sieges involving Swedish, Russian, and Napoleonic forces.
