💡 Tips

  • Book tickets for the Living Museum of Gingerbread (Muzeum Toruńskiego Piernika) in advance, as the hands-on workshops sell out quickly.
  • The best time to photograph the famous Leaning Tower is early morning before the tour groups arrive.
  • For a magical evening, walk across the bridge or take a boat to Kępa Bazarowa island at sunset to see the old town's illuminated skyline.
  • Remember that Toruń's historic center is a UNESCO site and is mostly pedestrianized; use the large parking lots just outside the defensive walls.

The Old Town of Toruń is an outstanding ensemble of medieval brick Gothic architecture and an exceptionally well-preserved urban layout. Founded by the Teutonic Order in 1233, it flourished as a major trade center and a member of the Hanseatic League. Toruń is globally renowned as the birthplace of Nicolaus Copernicus, the astronomer who formulated the heliocentric model. The historic site consists of the Old Town and the New Town, both characterized by magnificent Gothic churches, ornate burgher houses, and the massive Old Town Hall. Miraculously, the city escaped the widespread destruction of World War II, allowing its medieval character to remain intact. Key landmarks include the Leaning Tower, the ruins of the Teutonic Castle, and the 14th-century Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. Toruń was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997. The city also maintains a famous tradition of gingerbread making, dating back to the Middle Ages.
