Olsztyn is the capital of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, beautifully situated on the Łyna River amidst a unique landscape of numerous lakes. Founded in the 14th century by the Warmian Cathedral Chapter, the city features a grand castle where Nicolaus Copernicus resided and worked during the 16th century. During his tenure as administrator, Copernicus conducted astronomical observations and created an astronomical table that is still preserved on the castle's interior walls. Olsztyn is famous for having 15 lakes within its city limits, providing extensive recreational opportunities for water sports and nature enthusiasts. The historical Old Town was meticulously rebuilt after World War II, with key landmarks including the High Gate and the Neo-Gothic St. James's Cathedral. Today, the city serves as a major regional economic hub, particularly noted for its food industry and its role as the gateway to the Masurian Lake District. The Planetarium and Observatory continue to honor the scientific legacy of Copernicus.
