Słupsk is a significant cultural and economic hub in the Pomeranian Voivodeship, located about 18 kilometers from the Baltic Sea coast. Situated on the Słupia River, the city was granted municipal rights in 1310 and has a long history involving Pomeranian, Brandenburg, and Prussian rule. Its architectural centerpiece is the Castle of the Pomeranian Dukes, which now houses a museum featuring the world's largest collection of works by the artist Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz (Witkacy). Although heavily damaged during the final stages of World War II, parts of the Old Town and the Gothic city fortifications, including the Water Gate and the Witch's Tower, have been meticulously restored. Modern Słupsk is recognized for its furniture industry and as a major service center for Middle Pomerania. The city serves as a gateway to the Słowiński National Park and is a key regional transport junction. Słupsk is also celebrated for its national festivals of classical music and modern theater.
