Płock is one of the oldest and most historically significant cities in Poland, situated on a high embankment on the right bank of the Vistula River. From 1079 to 1138, the city functioned as the capital of Poland and was the primary residence of the Masovian Dukes, highlighting its central role in early Polish statehood. The Płock Cathedral, a 12th-century Romanesque basilica, contains the royal sarcophagi of Polish monarchs such as Władysław I Herman and Bolesław III Wrymouth. In addition to its deep historical roots, Płock is now a vital hub for the Polish petrochemical industry, hosting the headquarters and the largest refinery of the PKN Orlen group. The city effectively balances its medieval legacy with modern industrial importance, featuring a scenic Old Town and a commanding view over the Vistula valley from the Tumskie Hill.
