Wrzeszcz Górny is one of the most characteristic districts of Gdańsk, with a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages. Its name derives from the Old Polish word for 'heather'. The district, historically known as Langfuhr, flourished in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, from which many of its impressive villas and tenement houses date. It is the birthplace of the writer Günter Grass, and many places from his novels, such as 'The Tin Drum', can be found here. The heart of Wrzeszcz beats along Grunwaldzka Avenue, an important shopping street. The Jaśkowa Dolina Park provides a green oasis of tranquility. The gastronomy ranges from traditional Polish milk bars to modern restaurants. Thanks to its own train station and excellent public transport links, Wrzeszcz is easily accessible from Gdańsk's city center. The best time to visit is during the summer to enjoy the spirited atmosphere and the proximity to the Baltic Sea.
