Kwidzyn, formerly known as Marienwerder, features an Old Town dominated by one of the Teutonic Order's most formidable brick structures. The 14th-century ensemble of the castle and cathedral is unique because the two buildings are directly integrated into a single defensive unit. The complex is most famous for its 'Dansker,' a massive latrine tower connected to the castle by a 54-meter-long arched gallery, the largest structure of its kind in the world. St. John the Evangelist Cathedral houses the crypt of three Grand Masters of the Teutonic Order, which was only rediscovered in 2007. The actual residential Old Town was almost entirely destroyed during World War II, leading to a modern urban landscape interspersed with meticulously restored monuments. For centuries, Kwidzyn served as the seat of the Pomesanian Chapter and a vital administrative hub in West Prussia. Today, it is a key cultural center, with the castle museum documenting the order's history and the region's heritage.
