Malbork Castle (Poland)

Weather…

Malbork Castle, historically known as Marienburg, is the largest castle in the world by land area and an unparalleled masterpiece of Gothic brick architecture. Founded in 1274 by the Teutonic Knights on the banks of the Nogat River, it became the headquarters of the Grand Master of the Order and the capital of the Teutonic State in 1309. The fortress is composed of three interconnected sections, the High Castle, the Middle Castle, and the Outer Bailey, surrounded by multiple rings of defensive walls and moats. It is estimated that between 30 and 50 million bricks were used in its construction. Inside, visitors can marvel at the Grand Refectory, the sophisticated Grand Master's Palace, and the Church of St. Mary. After the Thirteen Years' War in 1457, the castle became a residence of the Polish kings. Despite suffering severe damage during the final months of World War II, it was meticulously restored over several decades. A UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997, Malbork now houses a world-class museum featuring one of the largest collections of amber art and medieval weaponry in Europe.
