Malbork, historically known as Marienburg, is a town in northern Poland inextricably linked to its formidable fortress. Malbork Castle is the largest brick castle in the world and a masterpiece of Gothic defensive architecture. It was built in the 13th century by the Teutonic Order as their headquarters and was later expanded. Today, the entire complex, comprising the High, Middle, and Low Castles, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Visitors can spend hours exploring the magnificent halls, such as the Grand Refectory, chapels, and the impressive fortifications. The castle museum houses rich collections, including medieval weaponry and a famous exhibition of amber artifacts. The town is situated on the banks of the Nogat River and is easily accessible as a day trip from Gdańsk, which is just an hour away. Summer is an especially popular time to visit, with knightly tournaments and historical reenactments taking place.
