Kwidzyn Cathedral and Castle (Poland)

Weather…

The Kwidzyn Cathedral and Castle complex is an extraordinary example of brick Gothic architecture and was the historical seat of the Pomesanian Chapter. Constructed in the 14th century, the castle is world-renowned for its monumental 'dansker', a massive latrine tower connected to the main structure by a 54-meter-long gallery supported by five soaring arches. This unique design provided both sanitary facilities and an additional defensive outpost during sieges. Adjoined to the castle is the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, a three-aisled hall church featuring exquisite medieval murals and intricate star vaults. A significant archaeological breakthrough occurred in 2007 when the crypt containing the remains of three Grand Masters of the Teutonic Order, including Werner von Orseln, was discovered beneath the cathedral floor. The complex reflects the complex power dynamics between the Teutonic Knights, the Church, and the Polish Kingdom. Now a museum, it preserves the rich history and culture of the Lower Vistula region.
