Koło Castle (Poland)

Weather…

Koło Castle was commissioned around 1365 by King Casimir III the Great as a strategic stronghold to protect the vital trade route connecting Greater Poland with Masovia. Built on an artificial island within the marshy valley of the Warta River, the fortress served as a key defensive outpost against the expansionist threats of the Teutonic Knights. The Gothic structure was characterized by its rectangular brick layout and a formidable circular tower located at the southeastern corner, which provided a commanding view of the surrounding wetlands. Throughout the 15th century, the castle functioned as a significant political hub, hosting various assemblies of the Polish nobility and royal visits. The fortress suffered extensive damage during the Swedish Deluge in the mid-17th century, leading to its gradual abandonment and eventual decay. Today, the atmospheric ruins stand as a testament to medieval military engineering, with ongoing conservation efforts aiming to preserve the surviving brickwork and foundations for future generations.
