The Old Town of Piotrków Trybunalski is a site of immense significance for Polish legal and parliamentary history. In 1578, the city was designated as the seat of the Crown Tribunal for Greater Poland, the highest court of appeal for the nobility, which earned it the name 'Trybunalski.' The historic district retains its medieval urban layout, featuring a central market square and Renaissance-style burgher houses. A standout monument is the Royal Castle, built between 1512 and 1519 by King Sigismund I the Old as a royal residence for attending parliamentary sessions. Piotrków is famously recognized as the cradle of Polish parliamentarism, having hosted the first bicameral Sejm in 1493. The city's multi-confessional heritage is evidenced by its various churches and the prominent Great Synagogue. Despite suffering damage during World War II, the Old Town has been meticulously restored and frequently serves as an easy on the eye filming location for historical movies.
