Mouse Tower of Kruszwica (Poland)

Weather…

The Mouse Tower of Kruszwica is the sole surviving element of a once-massive Gothic castle commissioned by King Casimir the Great around 1350. Standing 32 meters tall, the brick tower is located on the shores of Lake Gopło and originally served as a strategic watchtower guarding the border between Greater Poland and Kuyavia. It is internationally famous for the legend of King Popiel, who was allegedly eaten by mice within its walls as a divine punishment for his crimes. Historically, the castle was a significant administrative hub until it was largely destroyed by Swedish forces during the 'Deluge' in 1655. Only the octagonal tower remained standing, undergoing restoration in the 19th century to preserve its structure. From the top, visitors can enjoy expansive views of Lake Gopło, often called the 'Sea of the Poles' and regarded as the cradle of the Polish nation. The tower now functions as a major historical monument and a focal point for regional folklore.
