Kalisz is frequently cited as the oldest documented city in Poland, as a settlement called 'Calisia' was noted by the geographer Ptolemy in the 2nd century AD. Located on the Prosna River in the Greater Poland Voivodeship, it served for centuries as a vital junction on the Amber Road, connecting the Baltic Sea with the Roman Empire. Although the city center suffered immense destruction during World War II, its neoclassical reconstruction has resulted in a harmonious and elegant urban layout. Major landmarks include the St. Nicholas Cathedral and the monumental Town Hall situated in the heart of the market square. Kalisz is also traditionally famous for its piano manufacturing, particularly the Calisia brand, and is home to one of Poland's oldest philharmonic orchestras. The city successfully blends its ancient origins with a rich cultural legacy and a contemporary industrial foundation.
