Łęczyca Royal Castle (Poland)

Weather…

The Royal Castle in Łęczyca was constructed in the mid-14th century by King Casimir the Great as a vital component of Poland's defensive network. Built of brick on an artificial mound, this fortress served as a frequent residence for Polish monarchs, most notably Władysław II Jagiełło, who held court here following the Battle of Grunwald. Throughout the centuries, the castle withstood numerous sieges, but it was nearly destroyed during the Swedish Deluge in the 17th century, remaining in ruin for much of the following period. Post-World War II restoration efforts successfully revived the structure, which now serves as the headquarters for the Museum in Łęczyca. The museum is particularly famous for its extensive collection related to demonology, centered on the local legend of Boruta the Devil, who is said to inhabit the castle's depths. The architectural design features a prominent square tower and high defensive walls characteristic of the Gothic style. Today, the castle is not only a historical monument but also a venue for medieval reenactments and knight tournaments that celebrate Poland's chivalric past.
