Chełmno Old Town, picturesquely situated on nine hills above the Vistula River valley, is an outstanding jewel of medieval urban planning and architecture. Founded in the 13th century by the Teutonic Order, it was here that the 'Kulm Law' (Chełmno Law) was drafted, serving as a legal model for hundreds of towns across Poland and Prussia. The historic center has preserved its fascinating chessboard layout and is surrounded by one of the longest and best-preserved city walls in Europe. The town is also famous nationwide as the 'City of Lovers' because its magnificent Gothic parish church houses the relics of Saint Valentine, the patron saint of love. Numerous brick Gothic churches and the beautiful Renaissance Town Hall in the market square complete this fairy-tale picture.
