Chełmno City Walls (Poland)

Weather…

The defensive walls of Chełmno are among the most remarkably preserved medieval fortification systems in Europe, nearly completely encircling the historic town center. Constructed between the 13th and 14th centuries, the brick walls stretch for approximately 2,270 meters. The system includes 23 original towers and the prominent Grudziądz Gate, which was enhanced in the 17th century with a decorative Renaissance attic. These walls served as vital protection for the town, which was the foundational settlement for the influential Culm Law that governed hundreds of other cities. Beyond defense, the fortifications symbolized the wealth and status of Chełmno's medieval citizens. Today, visitors can walk along parts of the perimeter, enjoying vistas of the Vistula valley and the town's numerous Gothic church spires. Chełmno, often called the 'City of Lovers' due to the presence of St. Valentine's relics, owes its authentic medieval atmosphere to the enduring strength of these ancient fortifications.
