San Ignacio Guazú, a town in the Misiones Department of southern Paraguay, lies about 226 kilometres south of Asunción along Route 1 and is the oldest of the Jesuit missions of Paraguay. It was founded in 1609 by the Jesuit fathers Marciel de Lorenzana and Francisco de San Martín as the first reduction in the Province of Paraguay, even before the famous mission of Trinidad. The name means Great San Ignacio in honour of the order's founder, Saint Ignatius of Loyola. Until the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1768 the mission flourished as a centre for the evangelisation of the Guaraní people. Today the town has around 30 000 inhabitants and is an important cultural and administrative centre. The San Ignacio Guazú Jesuit Museum houses one of the most important collections of Jesuit sacred art in Latin America, with more than 100 wooden statues carved by Guaraní artists under the guidance of the fathers. Economically the town relies on cattle ranching, rice farming, tourism and public administration.
