Weather…

Trollveggen, or the Troll Wall, is Europe's tallest vertical rock face, soaring approximately 1,100 meters from the valley floor of Romsdalen. Part of the Trolltindene mountain range, this geological marvel consists primarily of gneiss and was sculpted by massive glacial activity during the last ice age. The first successful ascent was achieved in 1965 by both a Norwegian and a British team climbing simultaneously via different routes, marking a milestone in mountaineering history. Due to its extreme overhangs and frequently loose rock, it is recognized as one of the most challenging climbing destinations globally. From 1980 to 1986, it became a pioneer site for base jumping until the Norwegian government banned the practice following several fatal incidents. Today, the wall remains a majestic landmark for tourists who view its formidable silhouette from the nearby Trollstigen plateau or the specialized visitor center in the valley.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The area is usually reached via the Romsdalen valley, often starting from the visitor center area near the base. Accessing the top requires a long, strenuous hike from the rear side.
📅
Best season
The most handy time for a visit is mid-summer, when the snow has mostly cleared from the access paths. Winter brings extreme avalanche danger and the area is strictly reserved for elite climbers.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The base features relatively flat valley terrain, while the cliff itself is purely vertical rock. The hiking route to the summit involves loose stones and highly exposed ridges.
🎒
What to bring
Binoculars are highly recommended for viewing climbers safely from the valley floor. Those attempting the summit hike need sturdy boots, windproof layers, and ample water supplies.
🅿️
Parking
The main visitor center typically provides spacious parking areas with clear, dramatic views of the wall. These designated spaces can quickly become crowded during the peak tourist season in July.
⚠️
Safety
Base jumpers and climbers face extreme risks on the wall, and spectators should always stay in designated safe zones. Weather can shift rapidly, bringing sudden fog or freezing rain to the exposed summit.
⏱️
Time needed
Stopping briefly at the viewpoint usually takes about an hour or two for most standard visitors. A complete hike to the summit from the back side demands an exhausting eight to ten hours of continuous effort.
