The Art Nouveau district of Ålesund is a world-unique architectural ensemble that owes its existence to a catastrophic event. On the night of January 23, 1904, a devastating fire destroyed almost the entire city center, which consisted of wooden houses, leaving over 10,000 people homeless. Thanks to international aid, particularly from the German Kaiser Wilhelm II, the city was rebuilt in record time between 1904 and 1907. Approximately 50 young Norwegian architects, trained in Germany and England, designed around 800 stone buildings in the Jugendstil style, enriched with Nordic motifs such as Viking ornaments. Today, the district stretches along the harbor and is famous for its pastel facades, curved lines, and intricate decorations. The Jugendstilsenteret, the national center for Art Nouveau, is housed in a former pharmacy and documents the extraordinary history of this rapid urban reconstruction.
