💡 Tips

  • The Romsdalsgondolen is a great alternative to the steep Rampestreken hike, but the hike down is notoriously tough on the knees.
  • Buy tickets for the Rauma Railway in advance; it is considered one of Europe's most scenic train rides.
  • The Norwegian Mountaineering Centre (Tindesenteret) is a first-rate indoor activity with Norway's highest indoor climbing wall for rainy days.
  • If driving the Trollstigen pass, go early in the morning to avoid heavy campervan traffic on the hairpin bends.

Isfjorden Village

Åndalsnes is spectacularly located at the mouth of the Rauma River on the Romsdalsfjord, surrounded by the dramatic peaks of the Romsdal Alps. The town has a long tradition in alpinism and is today the center for outdoor adventure in Møre og Romsdal. The opening of the Romsdalen Gondola in 2021 now allows everyone to effortlessly reach the summit of Mount Nesaksla and enjoy views of the majestic Romsdalshorn. One of the most famous hiking destinations is the Romsdalseggen ridge, considered one of Norway's most beautiful and challenging hikes. For visitors with a head for heights, the Rampestreken viewing platform, hovering 537 meters above the town, has an incredible photo spot. Another highlight is the Rauma Line (Raumabanen), frequently voted Europe's most beautiful train journey, crossing the Kylling Bridge through the wild valley. The Norsk Tindesenter (Norwegian Mountaineering Center) in the harbor is for history buffs and also features Norway's highest indoor climbing wall. Gastronomically, in Åndalsnes you can try fresh salmon from the Rauma River or hearty mountain dishes. The town also serves as the excellent starting point for the famous Trollstigen mountain road. The best time to visit is from June to September when the hiking trails are clear of snow. Åndalsnes is excellently accessible by train from Oslo or Dombås, making the journey itself an experience. The combination of fjord and extreme mountains makes this place a gem for every nature lover.
