Trollstigen, translated as 'The Troll's Path,' is a masterpiece of engineering and part of the Geiranger-Trollstigen National Tourist Route. The road winds its way up steep mountain slopes at a 10% incline through eleven tight hairpin bends. Each bend has its own name, often named after the foreman of the construction crew that built it between 1928 and 1936. At the top of the pass sits a modern visitor center with striking viewing platforms that jut out over the abyss. From here, you have an unparalleled view of the serpentines and the mighty Stigfossen waterfall, which plunges 320 meters and is crossed directly by the road via a stone bridge. The surrounding peaks, such as Kongen (The King) and Dronninga (The Queen), provide a majestic backdrop. The location is a magnet for drivers, motorcyclists, and cyclists from all over the world. Due to extreme weather conditions and avalanche risk, the road is typically only open from late May to October. In winter, it is buried under meters of snow. At the summit, there is a restaurant and a souvenir shop where you can purchase the obligatory troll figures. Access is usually from Åndalsnes or Valldal. As Trollstigen is one of Norway's most visited attractions, it is recommended to plan your passage early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid heavy bus traffic. The drive is a challenge for the senses and an absolute must-see on any trip to Norway.
