Ålesund is world-renowned for its concentration of Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) architecture. Following a devastating city fire in 1904, the town center was rebuilt within just three years in a unified, modern style. Today, ornate turrets, decorated facades, and curved lines characterize the cityscape, making Ålesund one of the most beautiful towns in Norway. Visitors should definitely climb the 418 steps to the Aksla viewpoint. From there, you get a spectacular view of the city center, the surrounding islands, and the Sunnmøre Alps.
