💡 Tips
- Mountain weather changes rapidly; always pack an extra waterproof layer even on sunny days.
- The Besseggen ridge is incredibly popular; start hiking at sunrise to beat the heavy crowds.
- Mobile coverage is spotty or non-existent in the deep valleys; be sure to download offline maps.

Jotunheimen National Park is Northern Europe's most spectacular high mountain area. It is home to Norway's 29 highest peaks, led by Galdhøpiggen (2,469 m) and Glittertind. The landscape is characterized by deep blue glacial lakes like Gjende and jagged ridges. The most famous hike is the crossing of the Besseggen ridge, offering simultaneous views of the emerald-green Lake Gjende and the deep blue Lake Bessvatnet. Jotunheimen is a paradise for mountaineers, hikers, and nature lovers alike. During the summer months, the Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT) mountain huts serve as vital hubs for multi-day tours. The area plays a central role in Norwegian mythology and literature, most notably in the works of Henrik Ibsen. Wildlife includes reindeer, golden eagles, and ptarmigans. The best time for hiking is from late June to September, when most trails are clear of snow.
