Besseggen Ridge is one of Norway's most celebrated hiking routes, located within Jotunheimen National Park between the lakes Gjende and Bessvatnet. A striking geographical feature of the ridge is the color contrast between the two bodies of water: Lake Gjende is emerald green due to glacial silt, while Lake Bessvatnet is a deep, clear blue. The ridge itself involves some scrambling and features sweeping views of the nearly 400-meter drop between the two lakes. It gained international literary fame through Henrik Ibsen's play 'Peer Gynt,' where the protagonist describes a wild ride on a reindeer along a similar narrow ridge. Attracting over 30,000 hikers annually, it is one of the most frequented natural attractions in Norway. The hike typically takes six to eight hours and serves as a gateway to the high alpine scenery of the Jotunheimen mountain range.

Getting there

Access is typically from Gjendesheim or Memurubu, usually reached by a ferry across Lake Gjende. Many hikers take the morning boat and hike back along the ridge.

The main hiking window usually spans from late June to early September, when the path is largely free of snow. Midsummer provides the longest daylight hours for this demanding trek.

The route involves steep ascents, rocky surfaces, and narrow, exposed sections that require some scrambling. A good level of fitness and sure-footedness are absolutely essential for the crossing.

What to bring

Sturdy mountain boots with excellent grip are required, along with windproof and waterproof clothing. Bring plenty of water and high-energy snacks, as the weather can change rapidly.

Designated parking areas are usually found near Gjendesheim, but they can fill up quickly during the peak summer season. Shuttle services are sometimes available from larger nearby lots.
