Veles is a municipality situated in the central part of North Macedonia, extending along the Vardar river and up the steep slopes of the surrounding valley. This distinctive topographical positioning gives the city its characteristic appearance, with narrow, winding streets and traditional houses built seemingly on top of one another on the hillsides. The architecture reflects the region's rich Ottoman and Macedonian historical legacy. The city is regarded as a cultural center and is frequently referred to as the city of poetry. Veles is the birthplace of Kočo Racin, one of the most prominent Macedonian poets and a founder of modern Macedonian literature, whose birth house now functions as a museum. Another defining architectural symbol of Veles is the historic clock tower, erected in the 16th century, which prominent stands in the city center. Visitors can explore numerous historic churches, including the Church of St. Panteleimon, built in the 19th century by the renowned architect Andreja Damjanov. The municipality is also recognized for its handicraft traditions, particularly pottery. Veles provides an authentic Macedonian atmosphere, removed from the large tourist crowds.
