Vinica is located in eastern North Macedonia, at the foot of the Plačkovica Mountain and on the southern edge of the Kočani Valley. The town gained international fame following the 1985 discovery of a unique collection of terracotta icons dating from the 5th and 6th centuries at the 'Vinica Kale' archaeological site. These icons are regarded as some of the most important examples of early Christian art in the Balkans. Historically, the region has been inhabited since the Neolithic period, favored by its fertile soil and abundant water sources. Currently, the local economy is supported by rice cultivation in the Kočani Valley, along with textile and furniture manufacturing. Vinica acts as a cultural hub for the region, with museums showcasing local history and world-renowned archaeological finds. Its geographical position between mountains and valleys makes it a key transportation link in eastern North Macedonia.
