Treskavec Monastery, dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God, is spectacularly situated on Mount Zlatovrv near the city of Prilep. Built in the 12th and 13th centuries upon the ruins of an ancient temple of Apollo, it is one of the most significant Byzantine monuments in North Macedonia. Its isolated location at an altitude of 1,287 meters provides an unparalleled view over the Pelagonia plain. The monastery church contains precious frescoes from various eras, with the most notable ones dating to the 14th and 15th centuries. Despite suffering from several devastating fires, most recently in 2013, the church and its historical treasures have been meticulously preserved or restored. For centuries, the monastery was a major center for literacy and monastic education, and today it remains a popular destination for both religious pilgrims and mountain hikers.

Treskavec Monastery is an active monastery and can be entered by visitors. The church and courtyard are accessible, the monks' quarters usually not.

The monastery is usually open during the day, especially around morning and evening services. However, it may be closed at times.

Photography is usually not allowed inside the church, but permitted in the courtyard. Please behave respectfully towards the monks and worshippers.

Allow about 1 hour for visiting the monastery and its surroundings. The dramatic view from Mount Zlatovrv invites lingering.

Getting there
The monastery is accessible only via a steep, unpaved road that can be driven with a 4x4. From Prilep, the drive takes about 30 minutes.
